With OSS, the boot process for the VM gets a VB message saying that no sound could be opened, and while windows thinks it's making sounds (volume controls show, that kind of thing) there's no output. In the VM settings, audio shows as enabled, but of course there's no separation between input and output.

I use VBox 4.3.18. I set Intel Audio. The steps to finding the problem: (1) goto your guest os's master volume, set the properties to show all the volume controls for playback. (2) Shall see few items (line-in,..) are muted. (3) "Unmute" and "turn up the volume" them all. (4) Goto Control Panel, test your sound recording. It shall work now.

You need to be able to give access for sound and microphone and such via the security/privacy panel, but VIrtual BOx never requests it and so your sound doesn't work. At least, it needs to request microphone access, and never does.
