Audio is kind of choppy, depending somewhat on the kind of controller i use and depending on the application. Some applications run better, others do not. I looked up the manual if there are any audio buffers Virtualbox uses but to no avail.
Audio distortion/skipping/stutter in Windows ... - VirtualBox
https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/17225
In VirtualBox-5.2.19-125384-Win sound in/out works fine as well as in VirtualBox-5.2.97-125396-Win. I also tried sound enable/disable (VM menu Devices->Audio->Audio output): it works definitely better than in 5.1.x, but after several enable/disbale cycles the sound would crackle when it is disabled. Description¶. VirtualBox is a thing of beauty, but audio via a USB audio headset in the Windows 10 guest is just painful. Audio is slow, choppy and unintelligible. Host is a 10 core workstation with 128 Gbyte of memory, so it's not the limiting factor. Guest is allocated 4 cores and 8 Gbyte.

Since upgrading to VirtualBox 3.0.0, audio and video playback have become unusable with mplayer. Audio will stutter and skip constantly; video will pause for a moment and then catch up, repeatedly. This does not happen to such a great degree with other audio/video playback programs, but all exhibit the behaviour to a noticeable degree.

Choppy audio... by jtniehof » 7. May 2008, 01:33. This seems a fairly common issue around here, but figured I'd try. Windows XP guest; Ubuntu 8.04 host; VBox 1.5.6_OSE with the guest extensions installed. 1.83GHz Core2 Duo, 1GB RAM. I've been using the "play" button in the Windows sound control panel just to test audio.

I tried changing the audio settings to ALSA as the Host Driver, but audio sounds even worse with ALSA enabled in VirtualBox--audio is speed up and glitchy with ALSA. With PulseAudio, it's slightly better--the sound is output at a normal speed, but crackles and glitches out a lot. Other than the glitchy audio, the VM itself runs great.
