2017-6-1 · Tested VirtualBox 5.2.32 on Windows 7 host and Windows XP/7 guests. Audio quality is good. There is no distortion/skipping/stutter. However, delay is built up while playing sound. Audio is in sync at start but drifts gradually. There is a 2 second delay after 2 hours of playing. It is noticeable when start, pause or resume playing.

· The final 10% - and the total elimination of stuttering - came when I switched from the default PulseAudio driver in VirtualBox Manager's settings, to the ALSA Audio Driver. Please note, prior to the aforementioned reallocation of CPU's and execution caps, I had also tried this driver change, and it did not remotely eliminate the stutter.

· Apparently, it has something to do with something called S/PDIF, because it turns on and off while the audio cracks. Also, Pavucontrol frequently says "Establishing connection to pulseaudio" while this happens. With KDE, there is a constant message of changing devices, that says "Built-in-Audio" (has seen in the video).

VirtualBox 5.0 - Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack (Version: 5.0.0 r101573) Guest: Windows 8.1 x64. Host audio driver: PulseAudio. Audio controller: Intel HD Audio. 4 CPU cores - 4 GB RAM - SSD. No matter what settings / combinations I try the audio is always choppy inside the VM. Changing to ALSA makes it even worse.

2018-4-3 · When played in the host, such sounds are very clear, well defined (50-150ms). It might be something to do with the start of the sound being cut short. Long playing sounds (duration of seconds) do stutter, less regularly on my Windows host, but regularly on my Ubuntu host. Host OS: Windows 8.1 x64, Ubuntu 14.04 x64 (PulseAudio).
