The audio slider is grayed out. I assume that "No Audio Device" is the important bit. The most obvious explanation is that no audio device has been enabled in the VM recipe. @caveman: Time to see that VM log file. With the VM fully shut down, right click it in GUI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" (ONLY) to a zip file. Attach the zip here.

VirtualBox 5.2.22 on Windows 7 host. Audio is not in sync on Windows XP guest. There is always a 1 second delay. It is noticeable when start, pause or resume playing. Disabling audio output sometimes causes crackles. It also slows down playback timer on Windows 7 guest and stops playback timer on Windows XP guest.

Now, Windows XP GUEST has better sound than previous=VBox 5.2.20. There may still have a playback gap/latency but my ears heard no latency. I ran into a problem with choppy sound with a Windows XP Pro SP3 guest and the ICH AC97 audio controller. It happened in VirtualBox versions 4.2.16 and 4.3 on hosts running Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu 12.04 (Linux kernel 3.2.0-55-generic, PulseAudio). Switching the guest audio controller to SB16 made the audio less choppy but did not eliminate the problem completely.
