Is there anyway to use a optical audio cable for a wii u ...

Unfortunately, since the Wii U doesn't support any compressed surround formats, it will not work with any 'pass-through' HDMI-to-Optical adapter to extract the sound either. This is because linear PCM (which has an individual uncompressed audio channel for each speaker) requires more bandwidth than an optical cable can provide.

People just don't want to spend 200$ on an decoder, because that would make the Wii U cost 550$, just because Nintendo is cheap. It's also about surround headphones that are SOLD TODAY. And a simple dongle won't be possible. It's not about converting HDMI audio to optical out. It wouldn't be an actual problem, if that would be the case.

how to hook up Wii U to a exteneral dac via optical cable ...
https://linustechtips.com/topic/189968-how-to-hook-up-wii-u-to-a-exteneral-dac-via-optical-cable/
Since the geniuses at nintendo didn't include a optical output, the only option for digital sound output is through hdmi to your receiver, however, I want to hook it up to my DAC that doesn't accept HDMI. Is there any sort of HDMI pass-through adapter that separates the audio out to a coax/optical?
