two solutions 1) On VMware have you run vmware tools (on the W2000 VM machine) 2) install the native sound driver on the W2000 machine if you still have it. Then in the VM config for sound set it to use the hardware driver not the virtual sound driver which is -- usually something like soundblaster.

Intel HD Audio On Windows 2000 I had installed Windows 2000 on a VirtuaBox VM (Fully Licensed, Legal Copy), Installed the Unofficial WUA and Using Windows Update, Updated the VM. I also Installed Office 97, and Worked With It. I then Changed the Sound from Soundblaster 16 to Intel HD Audio, And Installed the Drivers.
