The solution here is to do ctrl-alt-insert and then choose to shut down without the updates (with a new Windows 7 installation there seem to always be updates pending). The VM machine must then be powered-off. Otherwise, it'll continue to misbehave after rebooting. I don't know whether this is related to the audiodg problem.

Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit Host, Windows-7 64-bit Guest, Sound Choppy/Crackling. I'm getting very crackling / choppy audio playing audio in the guest OS. There is just about enough sound getting through to recongnize a tune, but not enought to listen to more thana a few seconds. Sound appears to work well on the host OS. In the host OS: /etc/libvirt/qemu# aplay -L.

The audio crackling problem seems to be an artifact of windows 10 using smaller audio buffers than windows 7 - and VB not keeping up. In short, guest windows cannot process the audio IRQ fast enough under virtualbox and an audio buffer underrun occurs. Windows 10 reduced the audio latency (and thus the buffer size) from 10ms -> 1ms.
