The front audio jack has a AC97 connector which goes to the motherboard. I get the same audio on front/rear with realtek HD drivers in XP (no issues in XP). However, I do not need to install any drivers in Win7 (it detects and starts installing drivers on its own). It never detects the front headphone/microphones.
