I'm having an issue with audio in an XP SP3 guest, which was P2V and then run in Workstation 9 on a Windows 8 host. The windows default system sounds such as startup and shutdown, and playing MP3s, result in the audio being very slow, maybe about half the original speed, and stuttery/choppy and all around poor quality.

All sounds, such as the startup and shutdown sounds, are choppy on the Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista virtual machines. It has nothing to do with running VLC in the guest. The problem goes away when I run VLC on the Windows 10 host machine. The problem comes back when VLC is not open on the host machine.

With IO-APIC enabled the sound was choppy, if disabled everything works. And if it was enabled the number of the used cores doesn't matter. Even with a highend Core i-7 (Sandy Bridge, 4 cores, 8 threads) i had interruptions in the sound. For audio to work flawlessly, disable the IO-APIC, set the cores to 1. With XP-Guests this counts:

Choppy Win98 audio is a sign that something (either host or guest) is using a lot of CPU. All you can do is try to reduce CPU use. Setting video memory to 128MB is probably useless. It's normal RAM, so it won't make the graphics any faster: there are no GAs and hence no accelerated graphics for Win98 guests.
