While WMP 12 plays any video, there is no ffdshow video decoder tray icon, ffdshow audio decoder and Haali Media Splitter only. But ffdshow is configured to show these icons. As an effect, i cannot attach specific subtitle files to video and control subtitle timing. I think that is WMP uses its own video decoders and don't plug in ffdshow.

It does work. I was able to get it to play mkv files in WMP 12. My problem is that I really do want to stick with WMP 12 but I can't work out a way to shows srt files for my subs. Any ideas? I understand that you can do it with WMP 11 but that doesn't appear to work on Windows 8. I removed WMP 12 but it still didn't work.

I tested several media players many times using some selected music files over headphones. WMP, VLC, MPC/ffdshow, PowerDVD, WinDVD, JRiver, Foobar2k, etc. JRiver sound is not as clean as WMP.
