Finally fixed this problem - it turns out that the X-Fi Xtreme Audio simply DOES NOT work with Windows Vista Wiped out Vista on the 1720 - installed XP and hunted drivers and the X-Fi Xtreme Audio works flawlessly The only annoying thing is that you must slipstream the Intel SATA drivers if you are going to be running the 1720 in AHCI mode
