Dolphin is a CPU hog. Seriously when emulating any game, The CPU is peaking at 90-100%. So I always shut down messengers and other programs. Hmm I do use Skype, but again it isn't running when I run dolphin. As far as any other game/open source. with the Xaudio I don't honestly know. I don't have that many open source applications.

As for the differences you hear, such as when switching between DSound and XAudio2, you can probably chalk it up to how the newer API handles certain audio functions versus the old API. XAudio2 might be doing something that takes longer or maybe Dolphin uses it in a less efficient way than DSound.
