The passthrough device is when XBMC doesn't decode the audio bitstream. It passes the audio information through to something downstream to decode and then convert to analog to put out to the speakers. So if it's a DTS or AC3 (Dolby Digital) soundtrack, XBMC just passes that information along to your receiver or TV to deal with.

Switching the output device to SPDIF on both audio output and passthrough and configuring the receiver to take video from HDMI and audio from SPDIF did work, and I could hear the 5.1 channel audio without a problem. Also, just realized I never linked the debug output- here it is: Thanks again, Alan

Update the audio settings and to change the "Audio Output Device" to something else, something that would be invalid. Playing the same video stream that has the AAC audio nothing is heard in the speakers. If my understanding is correct the above shows the XBMC recognizes the audio as AAC but doesn't obey the "AAC Passthrough".

If I set "Audio passthrough device" to "AudioTrack (RAW), Android IEC packer" it works as it did in Kodi 18. So I don't have the option for DTS passthrough, just Dolby Digital. By the way, I also run Kodi v19 b2 on my Nvidia Shield Pro 2019 in the living room and the Kodi IEC packer still works fine, so I expect Amazon updated the Fire TV Stick ...
