I can also attest to Foobar + ASIO4All being much better than XBMC (I'm running OpenElec 2.0) using HDMI audio output with an audio/passthrough setting of hw:0,3 (corresponds to the HDMI output capable device/card). The situations you guys have is very different to mine.
