HD Audio Passthrough pushes you to x86/x64 Linux PCs with Intel or nVidia GPUs, or x86/x64 Windows PCs with Intel, AMD or nVidia GPUs. (AMD doesn't support HD Audio under Linux) None of the current crop of Android or Linux ARM boxes support HD Audio passthrough - and some don't even support DD/DTS passthrough (particularly the Android boxes).

This page goes into detail on using PulseAudio on Linux systems. PulseAudio is used when Kodi is installed in a desktop-environment rather than a dedicated/direct boot setup. PulseAudio allows normal video & audio playback in XBMC while at the same time allowing the user to get audio in their browser or other applications.
Question - Bitstream via HDMI from nVidia or AMD GPUs ...
https://www.avforums.com/threads/bitstream-via-hdmi-from-nvidia-or-amd-gpus.2180472/
Its been possible to bitstream hd audio codecs from a PC for years, from just about any PC with a HDMI port. The last time this used to be an issue was back in 2010 sometime. Is there something unusual you are trying to do? Otherwise its just a case of the playback software, i.e. Plex, Kodi etc. being set to bitstream.
New android media box with full HD Audio passthou - AVForums

HD audio pass-through requires licensing for that to happen. Till now at least most Android based boxes have not done HD audio pass-through only regular old Dolby/DTS 5.1. They probably have their own media player bundled with it, don't assume you can just stick XBMC on this thing and it will work either for video decoding or HD audio pass-through.

XBMC/Kodi - do you get 7.1 DTS-HD on your systems ...
https://forums.audioholics.com/forums/threads/xbmc-kodi-do-you-get-7-1-dts-hd-on-your-systems.92799/
What is probably happening is that even though KODI does report that the file you are playing is DTS-HD 7.1, it is extracting the core DTS 5.1 track and passing it thru to your receiver. Android has that problem too. As far as I know, the only way to have Kodi pass thru HD audio is to use a Windows or Linux machine.

Yes, nVidia HDMI does support these formats, for Linux using ALSA also. You are correct. GF100 and GF110 (GTX 470, 480, 570, 580) does not support HD audio bitstreaming, although you can still get 7.1 HD audio in the form of 8-channel LPCM over HDMI (same thing, except the DTS MA TrueHD symbol won't light up on your AV receiver).
