Any small pc can run XBMC headless, I prefer my Zotac AD02 over my acer revo for both performance and fan noise. In terms of physical size look at the Zotac Nano range, or the AppleTV hacks. Well looking at the latest commits against head there is a change to xbmc/main.cpp where XBMC_Run now takes a parameter for GUI rendering. So I have prepared the following patch to allow folks to run xbmc with --headless parameter to run without a GUI. Headless Patch

I have a headless pc with XBMC hooked to my living room stereo for a very similar purpose, music only. My music is stored seperately on a NAS, but on-board will work too, It works great. The web interfaces make selection of music from another PC a piece of cake. Try the default web server and also the others to see which meets your needs.

I have an Amazon Fire TV which I was hoping I could turn into a headless music streamer. I've sideloaded XBMC and got it streaming music over my network (controlled via remote) outputting audio via optical SPDIF to my receiver. However, if there is no TV connected to the HDMI port (at least briefly) since booting, I get no sound on SPDIF.
