Start Live CD > press 'S' > Exit XBMC > log in into Linux w/ username=xbmc and password=xbmc > type: "startx" to start Fluxbox. Right mouse button > Terminal > alsamixer. In alsamixer seek for 'IEC958' and activate it w/ the 'M' key if not already activated. Start xbmc from vthe terminal by typing in: "xbmc".

To configure passthrough, I went to system->settings->system->audio and selected the expert level. My output device was “imx-hdmi-soc, HDMI” with output configuration Best Match, sampling rate 48kHz, and resample quality High (This part worked; I could play MP3’s and MP4’s and hear the sound without a problem)

If passthrough: you only enable the audio codecs your receiver supports. Select only the correct audio output device for analog and passthrough; Linux specific. On AMD GPUs you must disable all "HD" passthrough options and "output stereo to all speakers". AMD drivers under Linux don't support HD audio passthrough. AC3 and DTS should be safe to enable.

On the Audio tab, select ALSA - Advanced Linux Sound Architecture, for Default Output. As Device, choose the digital device, in my case: ALC889A (my sound chip) digital. I selected ALSA also for Default Input, though I don't think Input has any effect, as long as you don't use a mic or something. In XBMC, I got both devices for audio and passthrough set to IEC958.
