The logitch system will only take analog audio, but is a 5.1 system (so no decoding abilities). The Sony receiver can take optical, coaxial, and rca audio inputs. It will do dolby and 5.1 out to its own speakers via regular old speaker wire. But it has no rca nor stereo mini output. that means I can't use my logitech speakers with it.

Same here on console support. My receiver has the inputs for 5.1 analogue audio but not HDMI. That means with the PS3 I can either have DD/DTS over optical, stereo over HDMI through my TV, or stereo through RCA cables, but if it supported analogue 5.1 I could get the full benefit of TrueHD, DTS-HD and PCM sound.

The 360 outputs Dolby Digital 5.1 and analog stereo left/right. If your Logitech is a lower-end model (like the Z506 ), it doesn't have an onboard Dolby Digital decoder. It's reliant on the connected device to output discrete 5.1 analog audio channels.
