Since Microsoft is no longer selling the combo pack of HDMI cable & audio adapter, I think your only option is to return the audio adapter you bought and try a different third party version. (The 360 Elite I bought in 2007 came with the official Microsoft audio adapter, and it fits alongside the HDMI cable.
