The 360 most definitely outputs sound over HDMI. You only need that dongle if you want HDMI + optical. Some people had problems with audio over HDMI after NXE was released, but that was patched. My problem with the 360 is that I don't know how to disable sound over HDMI when I'm using optical with it.

If changing the audio options doesnt work, the problem may be with your HDMI cable. Try using a different cable or a different HDMI port on your TV (it it has more than 1). If that doesnt work, try using the component cable (red yellow white) instead of HDMI to see if that is the problem.
