According to the manual, the "speaker" switch is said to control how the output of the Zumo is directed. So unless I misunderstood (or the translated manual is wrong) the Audio will be directed to the bike's speakers if the switch is in the position towards the rider (light in the switch comes on) and the radio muted for messages from the Zumo.

Look for the battery icon on the Zumo. The Zumo won’t output any sounds while on internal battery as it needs external 12 volt into the Zumo to output sound. I have to clean the brass pins on mine once in a while to be sure the pins are making good contact. Might be a blown fuse from bike power into the Zumo causing your problem also.
