Zune was discontinued in 2012 and the Zune software runs only on 32-bit Windows XP or 32-bit/64-bit, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8. In short, everything here is accurate until you get to the point when you synchronise to your Windows Phone with Zune. At that point, Zune will transcode Lossless WMA files to MP3, even if the conversion settings are set to, “Only convert media files that aren’t supported by the device”. That is, file compatibility. In fairness, Zune was already an improvement over iPod, in that it could handle wma, mp3 and m4a, whereas iPod could only handle the latter two. But I don't think it would've been that hard to have made it compatible with more audio formats, like FLAC and ogg.
